The first week of marriage felt like a dream. Ella woke each morning in Evan’s townhouse, the sunlight streaming through lace curtains, the scent of fresh bread from the kitchen below. They breakfasted together, laughing over toast and tea, and for a few precious hours, the world outside seemed to hold no malice. But the dream could not last.
Evan returned to his duties at St. Mary’s, and Ella, though reinstated, found herself isolated. The nurses who had once been friendly now spoke in hushed tones when she passed. The matron greeted her with cold civility, and even patients sometimes looked at her with suspicion. The hospital board’s apology had been official, but trust is not restored by decree.
One afternoon, as Ella was changing bandages in the ward, a young nurse named Lillian approached her, her face pale. "Mrs. Raymond, there is a lady in the waiting room. She says she is Mrs. Alistair Fairchild, and she wishes to see you."
