After the threatening note, Evan insists on escorting Ella home and notifying the hospital authorities. Thomas confronts Ella in the hospital lobby, revealing his jealousy and intent to reclaim her. Mrs. Gable's warnings echo as Evan stands firm. A sudden outbreak of diphtheria at the hospital forces Ella and Evan into quarantine, where they work tirelessly and confess their deepening feelings. The chapter ends with Thomas lurking outside Ella's flat as she returns home, preparing to escalate his harassment.
The note trembled in Ella’s hand, its jagged letters burning into her mind. Thomas’s threat was a shadow that had followed her from the tenement, and now it had found her at the hospital. Evan took the paper from her fingers, his expression hardening as he read it.
“This ends tonight,” he said, his voice low and steady. “I will speak with the hospital director and the police. You are not to walk home alone.”
Ella shook her head, guilt and fear tangling in her chest. “I can’t involve you in this. Thomas is angry, but he’s all talk. He wouldn’t dare—”
