Seth confesses his plan to Gypsy. Her reaction is complex – fear for him, but an unshakeable resolve to remain on Mars, leaving Seth torn.

The air in Gypsy’s hab unit was thick with the smell of recycled oxygen and something else, something uniquely hers – a blend of cheap Martian synth-booze and the faint, earthy musk of her skin. Seth sat across from her, his knees bumping hers under the small, utilitarian table. The dim, flickering light from the repurposed mining lamp cast long shadows that danced like nervous spirochetes across the metal walls. He’d rehearsed this a thousand times in his head, each iteration more eloquent, more convincing than the last. Now, faced with the reality of her eyes, bright and challenging in the gloom, the words felt like stones in his mouth.

“Gypsy,” he started, his voice rougher than he intended. He cleared his throat, trying again. “Gypsy, I… I have something I need to tell you. Something big.”

She leaned back, her arms crossed over her chest, a slow smile playing on her lips. It was a smile that promised trouble, and Seth knew, with a sinking certainty, that he was about to deliver it. “Oh yeah, Seth? Big like you finally figured out how to optimize the nutrient paste dispenser? Or big like you found a secret stash of actual coffee beans?”
