Earthbound or Martian Bound?
Seth makes his final decision, a choice that will echo across the stars. The fate of his mission, and his relationship with Gypsy, hangs precariously.
The crimson dust swirled outside Seth’s small hab-unit, a constant, gritty reminder of his Martian purgatory. He traced a finger through the condensation on the viewport, the faint outline of Earth a distant, mocking jewel in the inky black. Earthbound or Martian bound? The question had been a gnawing ache in his gut for weeks, a relentless internal debate that left him more exhausted than any shift in the atmospheric processors.
Gypsy’s laughter, light and unburdened, drifted from the small kitchenette. She was humming a tune he didn’t recognize, a jaunty, off-key melody that grated on his nerves, yet simultaneously soothed a part of him he hadn't known was frayed. He watched her, a swirl of vibrant fabric and untamed curls, as she expertly chopped synthetic protein, her movements fluid and confident. She was everything he wasn’t: grounded, unapologetic, and utterly fixed on this desolate, red world.
“Still staring at the big blue marble, Seth?” she asked, her voice laced with a familiar teasing lilt. She wiped her hands on a scrap of cloth and sauntered over, leaning against the doorframe. Her eyes, the color of a stormy sea, held a knowing glint.
