I was three years old when it started. It lasted five years. I don’t remember every moment, but I remember the weight of it—the way it settled into my bones before I even knew what fear was called.
At fifteen, I was in another kind of trap. It wasn’t the same, but it was familiar in the way pain can be. Ten years of it. I counted them, one by one, like steps I couldn’t turn back from.
