The air in the small, sparsely furnished room felt heavy, thick with the unspoken weight of generations. I sat across from Maya, her eyes, the color of deep forest shadows, holding a story that transcended the worn newspaper lining her walls. It was a story of survival, not just against the elements, but against a deliberate, systematic cruelty that sought to erase the very essence of her people.

"They would come," Maya began, her voice a low murmur, like wind through dry leaves, "the missionaries. With their promises of salvation, their Bibles clutched tight. But their hearts were as cold as the winter wind." She gestured vaguely towards a corner, where a thin, threadbare blanket lay folded. "The elders, the sick, the little ones who couldn’t walk far… they would let them go without. No food, no water, no rest. They’d watch them fade, their spirits leaving their bodies, and then… then they’d come for the babies. For the children."
