The weight of history can feel like a physical burden, a cloak woven from countless stories of betrayal and loss. And sometimes, when the world feels particularly harsh, that cloak can become suffocating. I’ve spoken of the resilience, the traditions, the sacred connection to the land, and the vital importance of ceremony. But to truly understand the path that has led to where we are today, we must also confront the deliberate, calculated machinations that have shaped the lives of Indigenous peoples for centuries.

The promises made by those in power, the treaties signed with solemn oaths, often proved to be nothing more than carefully crafted deceptions. The history books, the ones often found behind the sterile walls of classrooms, tell a sanitized version of these encounters. They speak of expansion, of progress, of manifest destiny. But the truth, the raw, unvarnished truth that has been whispered through generations and etched into the very souls of my people, tells a different story. It is a story of manipulation, of greed, and of a systematic disregard for human dignity.

Long before the forced marches and the trails of tears, the seeds of dispossession were sown. The White House, and those who held power within it, made promises they never intended to keep. Their words were smooth, their intentions veiled, all designed to facilitate the theft of land, of precious resources – the gold, the silver, the gemstones and minerals that lay within the earth, the timber that stood tall and proud, the very lifeblood of our ancestral territories. They spoke of partnership, of shared prosperity, while their eyes were fixed only on acquisition.
