The sun beat down relentlessly, a white-hot hammer against the dry earth. My legs ached with a familiar, weary rhythm as I walked, each stride a testament to the miles we’d traversed just to reach this point. The canteen, slung across my shoulder, offered little solace; its contents were already warm and tasted faintly of plastic, a stark reminder of the luxuries I’d once taken for granted. This journey, the one that began with a simple need for water, had become a pilgrimage of sorts, a daily exercise in endurance that etched itself onto my very soul.
We had left the reservation before the first blush of dawn, the air still carrying a whisper of coolness. Now, as the day wore on, that coolness had long since evaporated, replaced by a stifling heat that clung to every exposed inch of skin.
