The air in the small room felt thick, not with dust or stale heat, but with the accumulated weight of every single moment I’d tried to bury. The single bulb hanging from the ceiling cast long, distorted shadows that danced like specters on the peeling wallpaper, each one a reminder of a past I was desperately trying to outrun. I sat on the edge of the worn-out mattress, the springs groaning a familiar, mournful tune beneath me. Outside, the city hummed its indifferent lullaby, a symphony of lives unfolding, none of which seemed to intersect with the quiet desperation that had become my constant companion.

The sun was setting, painting the sky in hues of bruised purple and fiery orange, a spectacle of beauty that felt almost mocking. I saw a group of kids my age, their laughter ringing out, easy and unburdened, and a wave of loneliness so profound washed over me that I had to stop, leaning against a brick wall, my breath catching in my throat. They were living, truly living, and I felt like I was merely existing, a ghost haunting the edges of existence.
