The air in the community center buzzed with a nervous energy, a palpable blend of anticipation and apprehension that clung to the peeling paint and worn linoleum. It was the night of the mentorship program’s showcase, a culmination of months of hard work, late nights, and a heaping dose of self-doubt. My project, a proposal for a local youth entrepreneurship initiative, sat on a flimsy cardboard easel, adorned with carefully chosen fonts and a smattering of optimistic statistics. But as I looked at it, all I could see were the shadows of the faces that had dismissed me, the voices that had whispered I wasn't cut out for this.
"Looking good, Quinn," a voice said, startling me. It was Ms. Evans, one of the program coordinators, her smile warm and genuine. "You've really poured yourself into this."
