The air in the abandoned warehouse hung thick with the stench of decay and something metallic, like old blood. Dust motes danced in the slivers of moonlight that pierced the grimy windows, illuminating the desolate space. Elias Thorne, his heart hammering a frantic rhythm against his ribs, kept his gaze fixed on the hulking silhouette lurking in the shadows. Beside him, Seraphina Vance was a coiled spring of tension, her hand resting on the hilt of a wicked-looking dagger.

“This is it, isn’t it?” Elias’s voice was a low rasp, barely audible above the drip of water somewhere in the cavernous interior. “The first real test.”

Seraphina nodded, her eyes scanning the gloom. “The Shadow Weaver doesn’t play games, Elias. If it sent this thing, it’s meant to stop us. Permanently.” Her skepticism, once a shield, had begun to crack under the weight of the strange occurrences that had plagued them since they’d begun their reluctant quest. The ancient texts, the cryptic warnings from his estranged father, and now this… this palpable darkness that seemed to emanate from the very stones of this forgotten place.
