Elias traced the rim of his chipped ceramic mug, the lukewarm coffee doing little to chase away the persistent chill that had settled deep within his bones. It was a chill that had nothing to do with the unseasonably cool spring air seeping through his apartment window, and everything to do with the gnawing unease that had become his constant companion. The city outside hummed with its usual chaotic symphony of sirens and distant traffic, a soundtrack to a world oblivious to the precipice upon which it teetered. He was supposed to be Elias Thorne, accountant, a man of spreadsheets and deadlines, not… whatever this was.

The dreams had started subtly, flickering images at the edge of his sleep – a sky bleeding crimson, cities crumbling to dust, the hollow echo of despair. But lately, they had coalesced, sharpening into vivid nightmares that left him breathless and sweating, the phantom scent of ozone and decay clinging to him long after he awoke. He’d tried to dismiss them, to rationalize them as stress, a byproduct of his increasingly demanding job. But then there were the other things. The way the old grandfather clock in his living room, long since stopped, had chimed one resonant note as he’d passed it yesterday. The inexplicable warmth that emanated from the ancient, tarnished locket he’d found tucked away in his deceased mother’s belongings, a locket he’d never seen before. These weren’t the coincidences of a tired mind. These were whispers from a reality he desperately tried to ignore.

A sudden, sharp rap at his door jolted him from his thoughts. He frowned, his gaze flicking to the clock on his microwave. It was nearly midnight. Who would be calling at this hour? His social circle was as sparse as a desert oasis. He hesitated, a prickle of apprehension running down his spine. The dreams, the locket, the strange occurrences – they were all building, a crescendo he felt powerless to stop.
