The air in Dr. Aris Thorne’s study hung thick and still, a palpable miasma of old paper, dried ink, and something else… something metallic and sharp that prickled Elias’s senses. He watched his estranged father, a man whose brilliance was as undeniable as his elusiveness, pore over an ancient, brittle map spread across his mahogany desk. Dust motes danced in the single shaft of moonlight that pierced the gloom, illuminating the intricate, faded lines that Elias still couldn’t decipher.
“You seem… agitated, Elias,” Aris murmured, his voice a low rumble, never quite meeting his son’s gaze. His fingers, long and skeletal, traced a particular section of the map, a swirl of symbols that Elias’s eyes kept snagging on. They pulsed with a faint, almost imperceptible light, a trick of the eye, he told himself.
“Agitated?” Elias echoed, a dry laugh escaping his lips. “You’ve been sending me on a wild goose chase for weeks, Father. Feeding me cryptic clues, hinting at a danger that’s supposedly ‘imminent.’ And now this map. What is it you’re not telling me?”
