Pappa’s call echoed through the small cottage, a gentle rumble that nonetheless held Werner’s attention. He’d been tracing the patterns of frost on the windowpane, each intricate crystal a tiny, silent song. But his father’s voice was a different kind of music, one that always drew him closer. He found Pappa by the hearth, his familiar, worn armchair pulled close to the crackling flames. The scent of woodsmoke and something else, something earthy and wild, clung to him.

“Come, sit, son,” Pappa said, his eyes, usually so bright and full of a quiet joy, now held a flicker of something Werner couldn’t quite name – a deep weariness, perhaps, or a profound responsibility. He patted the worn armrest of the chair, a silent invitation. Werner settled beside him, the warmth of the fire seeping into his clothes, into his very bones.

For a long moment, they simply sat in comfortable silence, the fire a dancing entity between them. Werner watched the flames, mesmerized by their chaotic beauty, and then his gaze drifted to his father’s face. The lines etched around Pappa’s eyes seemed deeper tonight, like ancient rivers carved into a familiar landscape. He felt a pang of concern, a yearning to understand the weight that seemed to press down on his father.
