The air in the glade hung heavy, thick with an oppressive silence that had replaced the usual symphony of rustling leaves and chirping birds. The vibrant greens of the Whispering Woods had leached away, leaving behind a sickly, muted palette of browns and greys. Even the sunlight, which had always dappled the forest floor with cheerful patterns, seemed to struggle, filtering through the canopy in weak, anemic shafts. Werner clutched his father’s hand, his small fingers digging into Pappa’s calloused palm. The woods, once a source of wonder and whispered secrets, now emanated a palpable unease, a low hum of distress that vibrated in Werner’s very bones.

Pappa squeezed his hand, his own grip tight, a silent reassurance that did little to quell the prickle of fear crawling up Werner’s spine. They had followed the dying whispers, the trails of wilting foliage, deeper into the heart of the woods than Werner had ever ventured before. The trees, usually so alive with their gentle murmurs, were now ragged and still, their branches drooping like weary arms. Some stood skeletal, their bark peeling away in mournful strips, revealing a pale, bruised wood beneath.

“They are afraid, Pappa,” Werner whispered, his voice barely audible against the unnerving quiet. He could feel it, a cold dread seeping from the very earth, a sensation so profound it made his stomach clench.
