Unraveling the Darkness

The air in the cottage felt thick with an unspoken urgency. Werner watched Pappa stir the embers in the hearth, the fire’s glow casting dancing shadows that seemed to mimic the encroaching darkness outside. The trees’ pleas, once a gentle murmur, had escalated into a symphony of distress, a desperate chorus Werner could no longer ignore. He knew, with a certainty that settled deep in his bones, that they couldn't wait any longer.

"Pappa," Werner began, his voice small but firm, "we have to go. The woods… they’re hurting."

Pappa’s gaze, usually so steady and warm, was clouded with a familiar worry. He set down the poker, the clatter echoing in the quiet room. "I know, son. The whispers have grown louder, haven’t they?
