The gentle rustle of leaves, once a soothing lullaby, had transformed. Werner sat by the window, his chin propped in his hands, the afternoon sun painting stripes across the worn wooden floor. Outside, the familiar canopy of the Whispering Woods seemed to hold its breath. The usual cheerful chatter, the playful secrets shared on the breeze, was gone. In its place, a low, mournful hum vibrated through the air, a sound that pricked at Werner’s unease. He could feel it, a tremor in the very roots of his being, a resonance that spoke of distress.

He closed his eyes, trying to focus, to sift through the cacophony of the woods. It was no longer the soft, inviting murmur that had first drawn him in. Now, the whispers were sharp, fragmented, laced with a fear that chilled him to the bone. They spoke of a creeping darkness, of roots that ached, of leaves that withered before their time. It was a plea, a desperate cry for help that echoed in the hollows of his heart.

Pappa entered the room, his footsteps soft on the floorboards. He carried a steaming mug, the aroma of herbs filling the air. He placed it gently on the table beside Werner. "You seem troubled, my son," he said, his voice a low rumble, tinged with a weariness Werner hadn't noticed before.
