Werner stepped out of the familiar warmth of the cottage, the scent of pine and damp earth filling his lungs. It was a different air today, charged with a quiet anticipation that settled deep in his bones. The sun, a shy observer behind a veil of clouds, cast a diffused light across the clearing, painting the dew-kissed leaves in shades of emerald and jade. He wasn’t a visitor anymore, not truly. Pappa stood beside him, a silhouette against the ancient trees, his presence a comforting anchor in the swirling currents of the woods’ renewed energy. There was a stillness about him, a readiness that Werner recognized from the quiet moments before a storm, or the hushed calm after its fury. His hand, roughened by years of tending to his garden and the very roots of this place, rested on Werner’s shoulder, a silent affirmation of their shared purpose.

“They are ready,” Pappa’s voice was a low rumble, barely disturbing the air. It carried the weight of experience, of countless seasons weathered, of secrets kept and burdens borne. Werner nodded, his gaze sweeping across the edge of the Whispering Woods. The trees, vibrant and alive, seemed to hum with a low, resonant frequency, a symphony of gratitude and vigilance. The fear that had once pulsed through their leaves, a chilling counterpoint to their usual whispers, had receded, replaced by a steady, reassuring thrum of life.
