The air, once thick with a palpable fear, now thrummed with a gentle, resonant hum. Werner, his small hands still tingling from the warmth of the ancient oak, watched as the last tendrils of the encroaching shadow recoiled, dissolving into nothingness like mist under a rising sun. Beside him, Pappa, his face etched with a weariness that belied the triumphant glow in his eyes, let out a long, slow breath. The woods, his woods, were breathing again.
The sickly grey that had leached the color from the leaves was receding, replaced by the deep, verdant hues Werner had first noticed upon his arrival.
