Chapter 7
Guardians of the Grove
Elara meets Faelan, the leader of the forest sprites. Initially wary, Faelan observes Elara, testing her intentions. He holds vital knowledge of the woods' defenses and respects Lykos, but remains cautious of this human interloper.
The air thrummed with a different kind of magic now, a gentle hum that vibrated not just in Elara’s ears, but deep within her bones. It was the magic of the Whispering Woods, a secret she was slowly beginning to unravel, a secret that felt both terrifying and exhilarating. Lykos, his presence a comforting weight beside her, had led her deeper into the emerald heart of the forest, to a clearing bathed in dappled sunlight that painted shifting patterns on the mossy ground. Here, the trees seemed to lean in, their ancient branches intertwined like the arms of gossiping elders, sharing secrets only they and the wind understood.
“They are watching,” Lykos murmured, his voice a low rumble that blended with the rustling leaves. His gaze, sharp and intelligent, swept across the dense foliage surrounding them. Elara followed his line of sight, her heart giving a nervous flutter. She saw nothing but an unbroken wall of green, the intricate tapestry of bark, leaf, and vine. Yet, she felt it too – a prickling sensation on her skin, the distinct impression of unseen eyes.
Then, a flicker of movement, a blur of iridescent wings, and a cascade of tinkling laughter. From behind a thick curtain of ferns, a creature no bigger than Elara’s hand darted out. It was a sprite, its skin the colour of twilight moss, its hair a cascade of shimmering, dew-kissed cobwebs. Tiny, translucent wings, like those of a dragonfly but imbued with a spectrum of colours, beat with impossible speed, keeping it hovering in the air. Its eyes, large and luminous, were the colour of ripe blueberries, and they fixed on Elara with an unnerving intensity.
