The scent of damp earth and pine needles clung to Elara’s clothes, a familiar comfort that now felt tinged with an unsettling strangeness. Lykos’s words, echoing in the quiet of her small cottage, still reverberated in her mind, each syllable a stone dropped into the still waters of her ordinary life, sending ripples of disbelief and fear outwards. She ran a hand over her chest, her fingers tracing the steady beat of her own heart. It felt… normal. Just a heart, like any other, pumping blood, feeling the quickening flutter of anxiety or the warmth of a shared smile. How could it be a vessel? How could it hold something as vast and ancient as the Whispering Woods? The very idea was preposterous, a fanciful tale spun from moonbeams and mist.
Lykos had vanished as silently as he had appeared, leaving behind only the lingering scent of the wild and a profound disturbance in Elara’s soul. She had stumbled back to her village, the familiar cobblestone paths and thatched roofs seeming alien after her encounter. The villagers, busy with their evening chores, offered nods and polite greetings, their lives so anchored in the tangible, the predictable. How could she possibly explain?
