Elaborate banners, depicting swirling patterns of silver and deep indigo, had been unfurled overnight, draped from ornate lampposts that lined the cobbled streets. Elina stood at the edge of the square, her heart a nervous bird against her ribs. She’d spent the past few days obsessively tracing the imprints, her fingers ghosting over the rough textures of the city’s oldest buildings, seeking patterns, seeking answers. The imprints around the market square were particularly potent, a cacophony of emotions that had threatened to overwhelm her.
