The air in the village of Veridia, once so vibrant with the laughter of children, now hung heavy with a hushed worry. Andrei, his brow furrowed, watched as Elara, her small face pale and drawn, shivered despite the warmth of the hearth. Mihai, ever the quick friend, sat beside her, gently stroking her hand, his own youthful exuberation dimmed by the plight of their new companions. The illness that had crept into Veridia was a silent thief, stealing the rosy cheeks and bright eyes of its youngest inhabitants, leaving behind a trail of fevers and listlessness.

“They say… they say it’s the stones,” whispered Mara, Elara’s mother, her voice raspy with exhaustion. She gestured vaguely towards the rough-hewn walls of their homes, walls built from the very rock that gave the Carpathian Mountains their formidable presence. “The Whispering Stones, they call them. Ancient, they are. Part of our village, part of us.”

Andrei’s observant eyes scanned the room. He noticed the stones that formed the fireplace, the hearth, even the smooth, grey pebbles scattered artfully along the window sills. They seemed ordinary, yet the way Mara spoke of them, with a mixture of reverence and fear, told a different story. “Whispering Stones?” he echoed, his curiosity piqued.
