A Farewell to the Village

The children are healed, the village safe. Andrei and Mihai bid farewell to their new friends, forever changed by their journey into the heart of the Carpathians.

The last rays of sunlight, soft and buttery, slanted through the carved wooden windows of the village, painting golden stripes across the floor. A hushed joy, like the gentle rustle of leaves after a storm, filled the air. The children, their cheeks no longer pale and drawn, but flushed with returning health, were gathered in the central square. Laughter, bright and clear, echoed where only whimpers had been heard days before. Elara, her eyes sparkling with a vibrancy Andrei hadn't seen since their first meeting, chased a butterfly that danced on the breeze, her movements light and free.

Andrei watched, a warmth spreading through his chest, a feeling so profound it made his breath catch. Beside him, Mihai bounced on the balls of his feet, his usual boisterous energy returning with a vengeance. He pointed to Elara, his face alight. "She's all better, Andrei! Just like I said she would be!"

Andrei smiled, a genuine, unburdened smile. "You were right, Mihai. We all were." He glanced at the houses, their stones now seeming to hum with a quiet contentment. The whispering had faded, replaced by the murmur of life. The spectral form of the Hermit, usually a faint shimmer at the edge of Andrei’s vision, was absent, his task complete. Andrei felt a pang of gratitude, a silent acknowledgment of the wisdom and sacrifice that had guided them.
