The air in the village square grew heavy, thick with an unspoken dread that mirrored the darkening sky. A chill, not of the mountain air but of something far more ancient and sinister, snaked through the gathered villagers. Andrei felt it prickle his skin, a stark contrast to the warmth of the hearth fires that had been the village’s only comfort just moments before. Mihai, usually so quick to chatter, stood beside him, his small hand gripping Andrei’s tunic, his eyes wide and fixed on the edge of the forest that pressed in, a wall of shadowed pines.

“It’s coming,” Mihai whispered, his voice barely audible above the rustling leaves that now sounded like skeletal fingers scratching against the eaves of the houses.

Andrei nodded, his own throat tight. He could feel it too, a pressure building, pushing against the fragile hope they had painstakingly woven from the hermit’s spectral words and the patterns etched into the whispering stones. The stones themselves, usually humming with a gentle energy, seemed to have fallen silent, their surfaces cool and unresponsive under his anxious touch. The ritual, so carefully planned, felt suddenly fragile, a small candle flame against a gathering storm.
