Chapter 4
Whispers of the Void
The whispers grow urgent, tinged with a chilling darkness. Elara glimpses a tear in the starlit fabric, a growing void that seems to drain the light from her world.
The whispers, once like the rustle of stardust through a silken breeze, had begun to change. They were still there, woven into the very threads of Elara’s world, but now they carried a new note, a tremor that echoed not of distant galaxies singing, but of something vast and hollow sighing. It was a chilling sound, like frost forming on a windowpane, and it prickled the hairs on Elara’s arms.
She found herself drawn to the window of her small sewing room, the one that looked out onto the indigo expanse of the denim sky. Usually, this view was a comfort, a familiar blanket of comforting blues and purples studded with the diamond dust of stars. But tonight, the stars seemed… dimmer. As if a veil, thin as a spider’s silk but heavy as a storm cloud, was being drawn across them.
Elara clutched the Starlight Jeans, their familiar weight a small anchor in the growing unease. The pink ric-rac trim, which usually pulsed with a gentle, inviting light, now flickered erratically, like a candle flame caught in a draft. She slipped them on, the denim cool and familiar against her skin, but as the starlight surged through her, it wasn't the comforting warmth she usually felt. It was a jolt, a sudden intake of breath that stole the air from her lungs.
