The air in Willow Creek, usually as soft and familiar as a well-worn pair of overalls, had taken on a brittle edge. It began subtly, a chill that had nothing to do with the season, a whisper of unease that settled in the pit of Elara’s stomach. The vibrant blues of the denim sky seemed muted, as if a thin veil of dust had been drawn across its brilliance. Then, the fraying started. Not the gentle, comfortable fraying of aging fabric, but a jagged, aggressive unraveling. Seams on market stalls began to split, their colorful threads spilling out like startled threads. The cobblestones in the town square, usually so solid, seemed to shimmer and blur at their edges, as if the very ground beneath their feet was losing its grip.

Pip, perched on Elara’s shoulder, let out a distressed chirp. His usually bright, button-like eyes were wide with alarm, and he nudged her cheek with his soft, denim-scrap head. “It’s getting worse, Elara,” he squeaked, his voice a tiny thread of worry. “The whispers… they’re angry now.”

Elara nodded, her heart thrumming a nervous rhythm against her ribs. She’d felt it too, the growing discord. The starlight jeans, folded carefully in her work basket, pulsed with a faint, anxious warmth. She’d been practicing, of course. Following Elder Lyra’s gentle, yet firm, instructions. She’d learned to focus the starlight, to trace the invisible lines of the celestial tapestry, to listen to the quiet hum of the galaxies. But this… this was different. This was a violent intrusion.
