Chapter 6
The Blight's Embrace
The air in the village of Fjordholm had grown heavy, thick with a cloying sweetness that masked a deeper, more sinister decay. It was a scent that clung to the furs and hair, a constant, sickly reminder of the encroaching blight. Freya, her heart heavy as the mist that often shrouded their fjords, watched from the edge of the forest, her usual sanctuary now tinged with an unsettling stillness. The vibrant greens of the moss and the deep browns of the ancient oaks seemed muted, as if a shroud had been cast over them. Even the birds, usually a boisterous chorus, sang with a hushed melancholy.
Her grandmother, Solveig, her face a roadmap of a life etched with both hardship and wisdom, had been the first to truly understand the creeping sickness. She’d seen it in the wilting of the medicinal herbs, in the listlessness of the livestock, and most chillingly, in the fading light in the eyes of the villagers. "It is the Blight's Embrace, child," she’d rasped, her voice thin as a winter wind, her hand trembling as she clutched Freya’s. "It feeds on life, on joy. It is a shadow born of forgotten sorrow."
Freya’s connection to the forest, once a source of her ostracization, now felt like a lifeline. The spirits, usually so vibrant and communicative, were now faint whispers, their voices strained, like embers struggling to catch flame. They spoke of a draining, a slow leeching of their very essence. They showed her fleeting images: gnarled roots turning black, leaves crumbling to dust, and a chilling, spectral mist weaving its way through the trees, suffocating all it touched.
