The Weaver's Loom

Elara’s heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. The air in the Weaver’s hut was thick with the scent of dried herbs, woodsmoke, and something else, something ancient and potent that tickled the back of her throat. Old Astrid, her fingers gnarled like the roots of the oldest oak, sat before her loom, her movements slow and deliberate, each pass of the shuttle a whisper against the warp. Sunlight, strained through the smoky aperture in the roof, caught the dust motes dancing around them, transforming them into tiny, golden sprites.

“You are late, child,” Astrid’s voice, a dry rustle like leaves underfoot, finally broke the silence. It held no accusation, only a quiet observation.

Elara shifted, her worn leather tunic feeling suddenly too tight. “The path… it was tangled with shadows, Weaver. The spirits were restless.” She kept her gaze fixed on the intricate patterns emerging on the loom, a tapestry of swirling greens and browns that seemed to pulse with a life of its own.
