Chapter 10

The Spring's True Gift

9 min read

The stranger, whose name Elara had learned was Elias, had been a storm cloud gathering on her horizon for three days now. He had arrived like a whisper of the wind, a shadow cast by the setting sun, his clothes travel-worn and his eyes holding a desperate plea that resonated with a familiar ache in Elara’s own heart. She had watched him from the chapel's open doorway, a silent observer, her hands stilling on the worn wood of the altar. The spring, usually a tranquil murmur, seemed to hold its breath, its waters mirroring the agitated sky.

Elias spoke little, his voice raspy, as if unused to forming words. He would sit by the spring for hours, his gaze fixed on the water, his emaciated frame hunched against the cool forest air. She felt a strange kinship with him, a shared burden of unspoken pain, yet a deep-seated fear kept her from approaching him directly. His desperation was a tangible thing, a palpable force that seemed to stir the very air around the spring, and Elara sensed it was connected to the secrets she guarded so fiercely.

On the fourth morning, Elias was not by the spring. A knot of unease tightened in Elara’s chest. She found him leaning against the chapel wall, his face pale, his breathing shallow. He looked up as she approached, his eyes wide with a mixture of pain and something akin to awe.
