The air in the forest, once so crisp and alive, now carried a faint, cloying sweetness, like overripe fruit left too long in the sun. Elara noticed it first near the edge of the clearing, a subtle shift in the usual symphony of pine and damp earth. It was a scent that clung, that promised decay. As she ventured deeper, her boots sinking into moss that felt oddly spongy, she saw it. A patch of ferns, their vibrant green leached away, replaced by a sickly, mottled brown. Their fronds drooped, brittle and lifeless, as if a fever had passed through them.

A shiver traced its way down Elara’s spine, unrelated to the cool forest air. This was not the work of a harsh frost or a dry spell. This was something insidious, something that crept. She knelt, her fingers brushing against the crumbling leaves. A faint, almost imperceptible fuzz, like a whisper of mold, clung to the dying stems. Her botanist’s mind, usually a wellspring of calm analysis, whirled with disquiet. This blight was spreading, she could feel it, a creeping sickness that was stealing the very breath from the undergrowth.

She stood and scanned the surrounding trees. A few of the younger pines, their needles usually a vibrant emerald, now showed tinges of yellow, a premature sign of autumn that felt wrong, out of place. A knot of unease tightened in her stomach. It was as if the forest itself was exhaling a sigh of weariness, a silent surrender.
