Elara sat at the base of the Whispering Pine, her back pressed against its ancient, rough bark. The afternoon sun dappled through the canopy, casting shifting patterns of light and shadow on the forest floor. The air hummed with the gentle buzz of insects and the rustle of leaves, but beneath it all, she could feel a deeper thrum, a resonance that echoed within her very bones. It was the tree, she knew, its vast presence a tangible force. Silas’s words still echoed in her mind, a revelation that had both startled and soothed her.
“Your blood remembers, child,” he had said, his voice like dry leaves skittering across stone. “The magic of this place, it flows through you, just as it flows through the roots of this great sentinel.”
He had spoken of a lineage, stretching back through generations, of people who had lived in harmony with the forest, who had understood its language, who had been its guardians. And at the heart of that lineage, he had explained, was the Whispering Pine itself, its burls not just repositories of memory, but conduits of a primal energy that sustained the entire woods.
