The air crackled with a tension that was more than just the hum of insects or the rustle of leaves. Elara stood before Bartholomew, a small but determined figure against the hulking silhouette of the man and his entourage of burly loggers. The forest, usually a haven of dappled sunlight and gentle breezes, felt as though it held its breath, its ancient heart thrumming a nervous rhythm. Bartholomew, with his sharp suit and even sharper gaze, surveyed the scene with an air of impatient disdain. He saw only trees, timber, and profit. He saw no ancient magic, no whispering burls, no Elara and her fanciful notions.

“Miss Elara, I presume?” Bartholomew’s voice was smooth, but held a distinct edge of condescension. He gestured with a manicured hand towards the Whispering Pine, as if it were just another obstacle in his path. “Your… fascination with this particular specimen is noted. However, my company has acquired the necessary permits. These woods are slated for development.”

Elara’s hands clenched into fists at her sides. She could feel the tree behind her, a vast, thrumming presence. Its usual gentle whispers were now a low, urgent murmur, a chorus of distress that resonated deep within her bones. “This is not just a collection of trees, Mr. Bartholomew,” she said, her voice steady despite the tremor in her hands. “This forest is alive. It remembers.”
