Chapter 14
Bartholomew's Advance
As Elara reaches the spring, Bartholomew and his crew arrive, their machinery ready to fell the ancient trees. The forest trembles under the threat, and the whispers from the pine become a desperate chorus.
The air around the hidden spring was cool and clean, a welcome balm after Elara’s trek. Sunlight dappled through the canopy, painting shifting patterns on the mossy stones that cradled the water. Birds scattered from the branches, their alarm cries a frantic punctuation to the rising din. Elara’s heart leaped into her throat, a cold dread spreading through her veins. This was not the sound of wind or rain. This was the sound of intrusion.
She scrambled up the embankment, pushing through ferns and tangled undergrowth, her eyes scanning the dense woods. The rumbling intensified, accompanied by the harsh clang of metal and the splintering crack of wood. Then, through a break in the trees, she saw them. A monstrous, yellow machine, its metal jaws glinting ominously, was already biting into the trunk of a magnificent oak, its ancient limbs groaning in protest. Beside it, a group of men, clad in sturdy work clothes, moved with a purpose that felt brutal and destructive.
