The wind, usually a gentle breath through the pines, now carried a frantic urgency. It whipped Elara’s hair around her face as she stood at the base of the Whispering Pine, her hand pressed against its rough, time-worn bark. The whispers, once a soft murmur, had coalesced into a desperate chorus, a symphony of sorrow and fear that vibrated through the very roots of the ancient tree. They spoke not just of the creeping blight that had begun to wither the younger trees at the forest’s edge, but of its source, a foul sickness born of carelessness and greed.

“It’s coming from the west,” a chorus of voices seemed to sigh, the sound like dry leaves skittering across a forest floor. “Where the metal teeth gnaw.”

Elara closed her eyes, trying to filter the cacophony, to grasp the specific threads of meaning. The blight, she understood. The blight was a visible enemy, a creeping decay that painted the vibrant green of the forest in sickly yellows and browns. But the whispers spoke of more. They spoke of a purpose behind the blight, a deliberate act of destruction. And with that realization came a chilling clarity: Bartholomew.
