The salty air whipped Eleanor’s hair across her face, stinging her eyes, but she barely noticed. The ferry chugged along, a sturdy, reliable boat against the churning, grey sea. Behind them, the mainland faded into a misty smudge, and ahead, the jagged peaks of the Isle of Skye rose like sleeping giants. This was it. The place the atlas had whispered about, the place etched into the heart of the map with the strange, shimmering ink.

She clutched the worn leather of the atlas to her chest, its familiar weight a comfort against the unsettling tremor in her hands. Chapter seven had ended with her standing on the windswept docks, the ferry ticket a flimsy promise of an answer in her palm. Now, the answer felt a breath away, carried on the same wind that tugged at the sails of a distant fishing boat.

Beside her, Mr. Abernathy, the elderly bookseller who had sold her the atlas, adjusted his tweed cap. His eyes, usually twinkling with quiet amusement, held a new seriousness. “A rugged place, the Isle of Skye, Eleanor. Not for the faint of heart, they say. But then again,” he added, a gentle smile touching his lips, “neither is discovering the truth, is it?”
