The worn leather of the atlas felt like a familiar hug beneath Eleanor’s fingertips. Sunlight, the soft, buttery kind that filtered through the dusty panes of her attic room, illuminated the faded blues and greens of the map spread before her. It was a map of a place she’d only ever seen in her dreams, a place whispered about in hushed tones by her grandmother: the Sunken City of Aethel.

She traced the delicate, almost ethereal lines that marked canals and crumbling towers. A strange symbol, like a coiled serpent biting its own tail, was etched into the parchment near what would have been the city’s grand plaza. This was the inscription, the one that had bloomed from the ink like a dark flower, pulling her from the quiet routine of her days into a whirlwind of questions.

“Aethel,” she murmured, the name tasting like salt and forgotten stories on her tongue. Her grandmother, a woman who smelled perpetually of lavender and old paper, had spoken of it only once, in a voice thick with a sorrow Eleanor had never understood. “A city lost to the sea, child,” she’d said, her eyes distant, “a place of great beauty and even greater loss.”
