Chapter 6
Lost in Translation
The air in the library, usually a comforting blanket of old paper and quiet contemplation, felt suddenly thin and brittle. Eleanor traced the unfamiliar script with a trembling finger, the ink a deep, almost bruised purple against the faded parchment. It was on the map of the Isle of Skye, a place she’d only ever seen in dreams or the glossy pages of travel magazines. The inscription, a series of elegant, looping characters, seemed to shimmer, as if alive. It wasn’t English, nor any language she recognized from her extensive travels through the atlas.
“Lost in translation,” she murmured, the words a soft sigh in the stillness. Her heart hammered a frantic rhythm against her ribs, a drumbeat of both fear and an exhilarating, almost reckless, curiosity. This atlas, this repository of her family’s secrets, had always offered riddles, but never outright enigmas. The faded annotations, the cryptic symbols, they had always been *her* language, a language she understood, even if the meaning eluded her initially. But this… this was a wall of foreign script, a locked door.
She spent the rest of the afternoon poring over the map, her brow furrowed in concentration. She consulted other atlases, her own extensive library, even the dusty tomes on linguistics that lined the highest shelves, their spines cracked and their pages brittle with age. Nothing. The script remained stubbornly mute, a beautiful, impenetrable mystery. The sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in hues of apricot and rose, but Eleanor barely noticed. The light in the library grew dim, the shadows lengthening and deepening, mirroring the growing unease in her own heart.
