The air in the conservatory hung thick and sweet, cloying with the scent of night-blooming jasmine and the damp earth of potted ferns. Elara stood in the shadowed alcove, the moonlight painting the glass panes with silver lace. Her heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic bird trapped in a cage of bone. Across the room, Julian was silhouetted against the luminous garden, his profile sharp and familiar, yet now imbued with a disquieting strangeness. He turned, his smile faltering as he met her gaze, a flicker of something unreadable crossing his face.
"Elara," he said, his voice a low murmur, tinged with an emotion she couldn't quite decipher. Surprise? Guilt? Or just the practiced ease of a man accustomed to playing many roles?
She stepped forward, her boots silent on the cool mosaic tiles. "We need to talk, Julian."
