The air in the Matriarch’s study was thick with the scent of old paper and dried lavender, a perfume that clung to the velvet drapes and the worn leather of the armchair. Elara sat opposite her mother, the silence between them a chasm carved by years of unspoken words and averted gazes. The Matriarch’s face, usually a mask of unyielding composure, seemed etched with a fatigue that ran deeper than mere sleeplessness. It was the exhaustion of carrying burdens too heavy for any one person.
“You came back, Elara,” the Matriarch said, her voice a low rumble, a sound Elara hadn’t heard directed at her with anything other than cold disapproval for so long. It was not a question, but a statement, laced with a weariness that softened its usual sharp edges.
Elara met her mother’s gaze, her own eyes weary but resolute. “I did. There are things I need to understand.”
