Echoes of Regret
Fleeting apparitions, the Whispering Echoes, flicker around Elara. They represent lost opportunities and painful memories, attempting to disorient and trap her in loops of what-ifs.
The air shimmered, not with the dust motes dancing in a sunbeam, but with an unsettling, iridescent haze. It clung to the familiar corners of her living room, transforming the worn velvet of the armchair into something that pulsed with a faint, inner light. Elara traced the pattern on the rug with her bare foot, the fibers strangely cool, almost damp, beneath her skin. This was her home, yes, but it was a home seen through a warped lens, a reflection in a funhouse mirror.
A soft sigh, like the rustle of dry leaves, brushed past her ear. She turned, her heart giving a little jolt. Standing by the window, where the light usually struggled to penetrate the heavy curtains, was a woman. She was indistinct, her form shifting like smoke, but Elara felt a pang of something akin to recognition. The woman’s eyes, if they could be called eyes, were pools of liquid moonlight, and as Elara watched, they seemed to weep tiny, glittering tears that dissolved before they hit the floor.
“You shouldn’t have let it go,” the apparition murmured, her voice a low hum that vibrated in Elara’s bones.
