The air in Elara’s home was thick, not with dust or the scent of forgotten meals, but with an unfamiliar, shimmering quality, like sunlight caught in a spiderweb. It clung to the familiar furniture, making the worn velvet of the armchair pulse with an inner light, and turning the chipped porcelain of a teacup into something precious, almost alive. She traced the intricate patterns on the wallpaper, patterns that were both undeniably hers and yet subtly, disturbingly wrong – loops of silver thread that seemed to writhe, and blossoms that unfurled in slow, silent movements. This was her home, she knew it was, but it was a home seen through a prism, fractured and reassembled with the logic of a dream.

A chime, delicate as wind through chimes, echoed from the hallway. Elara’s heart gave a nervous flutter. She’d heard it before, a melody that was both soothing and unsettling, a tune that always seemed to precede something… significant. She followed the sound, her bare feet silent on the rug that now felt unnaturally plush, as if woven from spun moonlight. At the end of the hall, where the grandfather clock usually stood, a figure coalesced from the shimmering air. It was tall and slender, draped in robes the color of twilight, and its form was indistinct, as if it were made of mist and starlight. There was no discernible face, only a gentle radiance where one might have been, and a voice that resonated not in her ears, but directly in the core of her being, soft yet resonant, like the hum of a distant star.
