The sterile scent of antiseptic, a smell Elara had come to associate with this unending green, pricked at her nostrils. It was a smell that clung to everything, a phantom perfume of her confinement. Today, however, there was a subtle shift in the air, a faint tremor beneath the usual drone of machines. It was the kind of shift that might go unnoticed by anyone else, but to Elara, attuned to the slightest ripple in her stagnant reality, it felt significant. She’d spent so long adrift in this emerald sea, her days a blur of fading light and flickering consciousness, that any deviation was a beacon.
Her fingers, thin and papery, traced the cool, smooth texture of the hospital sheet. They felt alien, disconnected from the rest of her body, like delicate porcelain limbs. The green glow from the walls seemed to deepen, pulsing almost imperceptibly with each measured breath the ventilator forced into her lungs. It was a color that had once signified life, growth, renewal. Now, it was a suffocating shroud, a constant reminder of how far removed she was from any of that.
A memory, sharp and sudden as a shard of glass, pierced the fog: Daniel’s laughter, rich and full, echoing through a sun-drenched park. The vibrant green of the grass beneath them, the playful dance of dappled light through the leaves – it was a world away from this muted, institutional shade.
