The sterile scent of antiseptic clung to the air, a sharp counterpoint to the pervasive green that bled from the walls, the sheets, the very light filtering through the blinds. Elara blinked, her eyelids heavy, a leaden weight she struggled to lift. Each breath was a conscious effort, a shallow, rasping sound that echoed in the unnerving stillness. Machines hummed a low, rhythmic tune around her, their blinking lights a silent, insistent pulse against the verdant backdrop. Tubes snaked from her arm, disappearing into the humming behemoths, anchors to a reality she could barely grasp.

A figure emerged from the green haze, a man in a crisp white coat, his features calm, almost placid. Dr. Alistair Finch. His name surfaced unbidden, a smooth stone in the churning waters of her mind. He offered a small, professional smile, his eyes, a cool, clear blue, meeting hers with an unnerving lack of warmth. “Good morning, Elara,” he said, his voice a low baritone, steady and measured. “How are you feeling today?”

How was she feeling? The question hung in the air, a fragile bubble. Weak, adrift, a vessel battered by an unseen storm. Her tongue felt thick, her throat parched. She tried to form words, but only a dry croak escaped. She managed a weak shake of her head.
