The steady beep of the monitor was a metronome against the silence, a digital heartbeat Elara had come to both rely on and resent. It was a constant reminder of her fragile existence, tethered to this bed, to this room, to the oppressive, all-encompassing green. It wasn't a vibrant, life-affirming green, but a sickly, muted hue, like moss clinging to damp stone, or the stagnant water of a forgotten pond. It seeped into everything – the sheets, the walls, even the very air she breathed felt tinged with it.

But today, something was different. The usual fog that clouded her mind felt thinner, less impenetrable. A flicker of defiance ignited within her, a small, stubborn flame against the encroaching darkness. The passive acceptance she’d clung to, the weary surrender, was starting to feel like a betrayal. A betrayal of the woman she’d been, the woman she still was, somewhere beneath the tubes and wires.

“Nurse,” she rasped, her voice a dry, brittle thing. It took an immense effort to form the word, each syllable a battle against the weakness that still clung to her like a shroud.
