The hum of the machines was a lullaby of sorts, a constant, low thrum that vibrated through the mattress and into Elara’s bones. It was the soundtrack to her existence now, a symphony of beeps and whirs that punctuated the silence of her days. And always, always, there was the green. It clung to the walls, to the crisp sheets, to the sterile plastic of the IV bags, a thick, pervasive hue that seemed to seep into her very being. Sometimes, she thought she could taste it, a faint, metallic tang on her tongue.

Dr. Finch’s visits were like clockwork, predictable and precise. He would glide into the room, a figure of calm efficiency, his stethoscope a cool touch against her skin. His voice was a low, measured rumble, full of professional reassurances. “You’re making good progress, Elara. The vital signs are stable. We’re very pleased.”

But lately, his words felt like polished stones, smooth and unyielding, offering no real warmth. They glossed over the chasm of her confusion, the gnawing emptiness where her memories should be. She watched him, her eyes, accustomed to the dim, green light, tracing the lines of his face. There was a stillness about him, an almost unnerving composure that, in the face of her own disarray, began to feel less like reassurance and more like… control.
