The shadow detached itself from the periphery, no longer a fleeting impression or a trick of the verdant light. It coalesced, solidifying into a form that Elara recognized with a jolt that sent tremors through her weakened limbs. It was him. Not Daniel, not her father, but a twisted echo of a man whose presence had once been a suffocating weight. The memory, sharp and unwelcome, pierced through the fog of her consciousness. His eyes, once filled with a possessive fire, now held a chilling emptiness. His lips, which had once pressed against hers with a desperate hunger, were drawn into a thin, cruel line. This was the shadow, the one that had lurked in the corners of her dreams, the one she had desperately tried to outrun.

A wave of panic threatened to drown her. Her breath hitched, the rhythmic hiss of the ventilator a stark counterpoint to her racing heart. She wanted to recoil, to pull the thin hospital sheets tighter around her, to disappear into the anonymity of the green-tinged room. But something held her fast. A deep, primal instinct that whispered of unfinished business, of a truth that could only be unearthed by confronting the very thing she feared most.

"Who are you?" she rasped, the sound thin and reedy, barely audible above the hum of the machines.
