The air in the room, perpetually tinged with that insistent, sickly green, felt thicker today, heavier. Elara’s breath hitched, a fragile flutter against the steady hiss and beep of the machines that were her constant companions. Each inhalation was a conscious effort, a victory hard-won against the languid pull of the sheets, the weary ache in her bones. She’d been here, adrift in this sea of jade and chrome, for… how long? He was leaning over her, his eyes, the color of a summer sky, crinkling at the corners. “You’re thinking too hard, Elara,” he’d said, his voice a low rumble against her ear. “Just breathe.” Breathe. The word felt like a cruel joke now.
