Chapter 9
The First Test
An anomaly in the veil causes a localized disturbance. Julijona, guided by instinct and the Vaseline's subtle hum, intervenes, her actions having an immediate, visible impact.
The air in Julijona’s small apartment felt suddenly thick, like the humid breath before a storm. It wasn’t a physical heaviness, but a prickling sensation that crawled across her skin, a familiar tremor that had become more frequent since the jar of ‘Original Protecting Jelly’ had found its way into her life. She was sitting by the window, tracing the condensation patterns with a fingertip, the faint scent of the Vaseline clinging to her skin a comforting anchor. The prickling intensified, coalescing into a low hum that seemed to emanate from the very core of her being. It was the Vaseline, she knew, a silent thrumming that resonated with the unseen currents flowing just beyond the edge of normal perception. She looked at her hands, the skin smooth and protected, but now, beneath the surface, she felt a surge of awareness, a tingling anticipation. The hum grew, a resonant frequency that vibrated through the floorboards, through the very bones of the building.
“Do you feel that?” Julijona asked, her voice barely a whisper.
