Skepticism and Shadows
Julijona confides in her friend Elara, who is initially skeptical. Meanwhile, Silas, a figure of ambition, begins to notice Julijona's unusual perceptions, seeing opportunity or threat.
The weight of knowing settled upon Julijona like a damp cloak, heavy and clinging. She’d spent the morning in a daze, the ordinary world of rattling trams and bustling market stalls feeling like a flimsy stage set. The shimmering currents, the faint hum of unseen pacts, the very air thrumming with a life invisible to most – it was all still there, a constant, insistent presence. She’d tried to shake it off, to dismiss it as a trick of the light, a figment of an overactive imagination fueled by that peculiar jar of ‘Original Protecting Jelly.’ But the Vaseline, cool and faintly greasy on her fingertips, had been too real. The world it revealed, too vivid.
She needed to tell someone. The thought pulsed with an urgency that surprised her. Who else but Elara? Her oldest friend, the anchor to her everyday existence, the one person who knew the contours of her heart better than she knew them herself. Julijona found Elara at their usual spot in the park, a worn wooden bench beneath the shade of an ancient oak. Elara was sketching, her brow furrowed in concentration as she captured the intricate dance of sunlight and leaves.
“Elara?” Julijona’s voice was a little shaky, betraying her inner turmoil.
